TOWNS IN OFFALY

The main towns in Co Offaly are: Tullamore, EdenderryBirrClaraFerbane and Banagher.

Tullamore
Tullamore is the county town of Offaly. The Irish for Tullamore is Tulach Mhór. It is located in the middle of the county. The population of the immediate town is 12,000 approx but taking the broader hinterland into account has a population of 20,000. Tullamore is the administrative capital of Offaly.

Tullamore has a distillery which makes the world famous Irish Mist and Tullamore DEW. There are other industries also in the town making medical devices, packaging for the pharmaceutical indutries and sound systems. Tullamore has a number of top class hotels and it attracts lots of tourists.

Birr
Birr is situated in the southwest of Co Offaly very close to the Tipperary border. The Irish for Birr is Biorra. Biorra means watery fields. It is built on the Camcor River which joins with the Little Brosna and then both flow into the Brosna River which is a tributary of the Shannon.

Birr itself has graceful wide streets and elegant buildings. One of the most famous buildings in Birr is Birr Castle, the home of Lord and Lady Rosse. The castle contains a Historic Science Centre in which can be seen some astronomical and photographic instruments used by the Earls of Rosse. In the castle grounds there is also a giant astronomical telescope (pictured in the banner at the top of the page).

Clara
The Irish for Clara is An Clárach. Clara is situated on the River Brosna about 8 km to the north-west of Tullamore. At one time there were many industries in Clara like Goodbody's Jute Manufacturing and Flour Milling.

Today the main industries are food processing, medical equipment and upholstery. The nearby Clara Bog is a World Heritage site.

The famous golfer Shane Lowry is a native of Clara as is the former Taoiseach Mr Cowen T.D.


Ferbane 
The Irish for Ferbane is An Féar Bán which means white grass probably coming from the bog cotton which grows in abundance in the nearby bogs. Ferbane is situated halfway between Birr and Athlone. it has a population of about 1,500. The first peat burning ESB power was built in Ferbane. When the station closed the ESB built a business park for the community.

Ferbane has a very strong sporting tradition particularly in GAA circles.

Banagher 
Banagher or Beannchar na Sionna in Irish sits on the river Shannon. Because of its marina it is a major centre for cruising holidays on the River Shannon.

It is a business town with the main industry being Banagher Concrete. Its current population is around 1,600.
