Bogland Habitat Workshop

Having already achieved Green Flags in litter and waste management, energy conservation, water conservation and environmental travel awareness we are now in the process of attaining our fifth green flag which is awarded for Bio-Diversity. As part of raising awareness in this area our students attended a Bogland Habitat Workshop in Edenderry Library. This workshop was presented by Nuala Madigan of Irish Peat Conservation Council operating out of Lullymore. The children focussed on the flora and the fauna of the bog and how the bogs were formed. During the workshop the children constructed their own 'Bog in a Bottle' as well as handling bog animals such as the beetle, the water boatman and the newt. Upon returning to school the students had to complete a work pack based on the information given at the workshop. Given Edenderry’s and Offaly’s rich bogland heritage we feel that was a most beneficial exercise in promoting the children’s local environment.

Our school has also combined with Edenderry Tidy Towns to create hedgehog boxes and insect boxes for animals to hibernate in throughout the winter. We will have more details of this project in the coming weeks.
